The USA is the world leader for a single country in online retail sales, which only consists of sales for business to consumer goods. Compared with other countries of the world, the competition in e-commerce markets is much more fierce, but there is also a lot of money to be made for those that can keep up with the competition.

The growth of annual online sales has been slowing down over the past few years in the United States of America, but that is normal for a country that has experienced so much growth in this area over the past 10 years. With $194 billion in sales in 2011 and a revenue growth of 15% over 2010, the USA is set to top $200 billion for 2012.

There is a clear division in the USA market when it comes to internet sales. Roughly 78% of all online retail sales are done through retailers that do not have a brick and mortar location for their customers. Online and offline marketers will want to target different product category niches because their popularity online can widely vary based on whether the retail has a brick and mortar location or not.

One excellent example that shows this is the automotive industry. They represent the largest category of product sales online for retailers that also have real stores. However, sales in this same industry for non-store retailers is nowhere near as popular and does not even rank among the top categories.

Clothing and clothing accessories products are purchased online more frequently than any other type of product in the United States. Clothing accessories really includes almost anything that can be worn including footwear, handbags, hats, and certain types of jewelry.

Any market that has luxury goods being sold will have some type of seasonal fluctuations with sales, so it is very important to understand more complex habits and demographics of the consumers in the USA.
